Fire Prevention and Your Chimney

Keeping a chimney clean is important because it can help prevent home fires! When you burn a fire in your fireplace soot builds up as well as creosote. They produce a thick buildup like tar. Here are a few signs that would indicate you should have your chimney cleaned, oily spots on the walls of your chimney, poorly burning fires, odors coming from the fireplace, the chimney damper has creosote buildup. A damper is what allows the air out of the chimney.

Chimneys should be inspected once per year. Typically, the best time to do this is in the fall before the cold weather arrives or late spring. If you’re purchasing a home and you do not know when the last inspection was, its important to have it inspected prior to burning a fire. When choosing a someone to inspect your chimney we always recommend that the inspector is CSIA certified.
